Frequently Asked Questions

Is It The Law To Learn First Aid?

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive

immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. These Regulations apply to all workplaces including those with less than five employees and to the self-employed.

HSE will prosecute in cases where there is a significant risk, a disregard for established standards or persistent poor compliance with the law.

Can I Be Sued For Doing First Aid?

SARAH to the rescue - The Social Action, Responsibility & Heroism Act 2015

The stated purpose of the Act is to provide a greater degree of reassurance and protection to good samaritans, volunteers and those who may be deterred from participating in socially useful activities due to worries about risk or liability.

Nobody has ever been successfully sued in the UK when acting in the best interest of a patient.

Will I Break Ribs Doing CPR?

Unfortunately you may hear a cracking sound or feel something crack or give beneath your hands. This can obviously be disconcerting for the rescuer.

Contrary to popular belief It is usually the cartilage in the sternum or ribs breaking, and not the ribs themselves.

The truth is that CPR is a vigorous, sometimes violent procedure. There is a high risk of injury to the patient but injury is preferable than death.
